“I feel like there’s no other cultural group that gets slack for expressing themselves through their hair." Margo Hannah
TENDERHEADED is a visual art experience exploring hair and identity. Its main focus is a collaborative series of portraits and photographs by creative director and stylist Margo Hannah and photographer Esdras T. Thelusma.
Hair is deeply rooted in the identity of black women but black hair has always had a hard time finding its place in American society. Despite its tangled history, black hair has always been innovative and unapologetic.
TENDERHEADED aims to capture how black hair operates as a method of self-expression and individuality. It also seeks to normalize hairstyles that would otherwise be considered "ghetto" or "classless" due to its nonconformity to European beauty standards.
The opening night will include a panel discussion focusing on the importance of hair in black culture and the stigma that comes along with it. Through this panel, attendees will be able to gain more insight on the black experience through hair. Panel with Abby Jahaira, Kiyomi House, Suzi Analog and host Octavia Yearwood.
Artists:
Margo Hannah is a multidimensional artist from Overtown, Miami, FL concentrating mainly in fashion styling, design and creative direction. Her work often incorporates concepts based on identity and culture.
Esdras T. Thelusma, best known as PhotoTea, is a visual artist from Miami's inner city. His style is minimalist and natural, preserving the true beauty and integrity of the subjects before him.
